Tips

Every child's path through language

Marge Blanc's 6-stage Natural Language Acquisition framework describes how gestalt processors develop from echoed phrases to fully original language.

1

Whole Gestalts

Your child uses complete phrases from movies, songs, or things they've heard. The whole phrase is one unit of meaning.

"To infinity and beyond!" — meaning: I'm excited!
2

Mitigated Gestalts

Chunks from different sources get mixed and matched. The language is no longer an exact echo — pieces are being rearranged.

"Go + want cookie" — combining parts of two familiar phrases
3

Single Words

Individual words are broken out of longer gestalts and used on their own. This is a critical decomposition step.

"cookie" — extracted from the longer phrase, used independently
4

Novel Combinations

Your child starts building original two-word phrases from scratch — not from old scripts. Early grammar appears.

"want park" — a self-generated combination
5

Complex Sentences

Longer, original sentences with developing grammar. Questions, negations, and multi-part ideas start appearing.

"I want to go outside now" — fully self-generated
6

Advanced Language

Flexible, sophisticated language with conditionals, reasoning, and narrative. Near-typical grammar and expression.

"If it stops raining, maybe we could go to the park?" — abstract reasoning

Common questions

Gestalt language processing (GLP) is a way of learning language where children acquire whole phrases or "chunks" of language (called gestalts) before breaking them down into individual words. Many autistic children are gestalt language processors. Instead of learning word-by-word, they learn language in rich, intonation-filled phrases from movies, songs, books, and caregivers, then gradually decompose these into smaller units and eventually create their own original sentences.
No. GestaltPath is a companion tool that helps parents understand and respond to their child's language between therapy sessions. It does not diagnose, assess, or replace the work of a qualified speech-language pathologist (SLP). We always recommend working with an SLP who understands gestalt language processing.
Our three-tier AI pipeline was benchmarked against 50 expert-coded utterances and achieved 94-100% accuracy depending on the NLA stage. For simpler stages (1-3), accuracy is at or near 100%. For more complex stages, the system escalates to more powerful models. When the AI is uncertain, it shows you two possible stages and lets you choose, or flags the utterance for SLP review.
Absolutely. GestaltPath is COPPA compliant. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Audio recordings are processed and immediately discarded — we never store raw audio on our servers. You can export or delete all your data at any time. The app collects no data directly from children. Live Practice Mode only records when you explicitly tap Start, with a clear on-screen indicator. For privacy requests or data deletion, contact privacy@gestaltpath.com.
Live Practice Mode lets you start a guided 10-15 minute session during a daily routine (like playtime or mealtime). The app listens through your phone's microphone, detects utterances, classifies them in real time, and shows you on-screen coaching prompts with specific phrases to model. After the session, you get a summary of everything that was detected. The microphone is only active when you choose — there is no always-on listening.
Yes! The Family plan includes a shareable progress summary you can show your SLP or family. The Professional plan adds detailed clinical reports with session notes, stage distribution over time, and exportable data that SLPs can use in their own documentation. Many SLPs tell us these reports are more detailed than what they typically receive from parents.
GestaltPath is designed for parents and caregivers of children of any age who are gestalt language processors. While gestalt processing is most commonly identified in children aged 2-8, the NLA framework applies to processors of all ages. The app adapts its coaching prompts based on your child's current stage, not their age.
